So you’re planning a trip to the City by the Bay. Or maybe you’re already there and want to plan a day of romance in San Francisco with your loved one. Awesome. This is the definitely the right post for you!
We spent an amazing couple of days, frantically dashing round San Francisco, making sure we saw all the ‘big sights’. If you’re after a short itinerary check out our ’48 hours in’ post here. We had a very short window to explore everything, so unfortunately there was little romance in San Francisco for us. However our recommendation for a romantic dinner below was something we did properly.
There are loads of other ‘romance in San Francisco’ blogs out there; they include visiting a spa or people watching. 1. That’s not really us. 2. You can do that anywhere! We’ve tried to include only things you can do or see in the The Golden City.
What better way to start the day, than with a good hearty breakfast. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, a hostel or renting an apartment, get out nice and early. Start in The Castro district and visit Castro Tarts. An affordable spot to grab some delicious brekkie.
Once you’re done fuelling up, enjoy a stroll through this LGBT friendly district. As well as enjoying the atmosphere, things might get a little hot under the collar as you play ‘spot the innuendo’. Some of the businesses here have fantastic names such as Squat & Gobble (Cafe and crepery); The Sausage Factory, (Italian restaurant); and Hand Job (nail spa).
Now jump in a taxi, cuddle up on the back seat and head towards you know where. Yes the famed Golden Gate bridge! What could be more romantic than seeing one of the world’s most famous icons together? Take your camera (and probably a coat – it’s windy!) and make some memories.
Okay so this is quite a lot of walking, but hey everyone loves a nice romantic walk. So now you’ve been on the bridge; but you probably want to look at it some more right? Take your loved one’s hand, kick off your shoes, roll up your trousers/dress and enjoy a nice walk along the beach at Crissy Field. With the big GG behind you, it’s an opportunity for some more great snaps and sweet talking.
By now your stomach is probably rumbling, or you’ll at least be peckish, There are so many great cafes and restaurants in San Fran to choose from; however we love saving money where we can so here’s a great idea that ticks so many boxes. Find the nearest grocery store and grab some sandwiches, crisps, chocolates etc and a bottle of wine (obviously one with a screw top) and then head to Golden Gate Park. It’s picnic time!
You’ve done a lot of walking (or cycling if you decide to hire bikes) so far and deserve a rest. Assuming it’s a nice day, make the most of the park. Whether it’s just relaxing in each other’s arms under the warm Californian sun, or having an uber-competitive game of Frisbee golf (whatever floats your boat…ooh you can also hire a pedalo or row boat!)
If you’re after some romance in San Francisco, make sure you don’t miss the sunset. Make the slightly arduous journey (yes, some more walking, well hiking now I’m afraid) up to the top of the Twin Peaks and wait. Find a spot, settle down together and wait for the magic to happen – you won’t be disappointed.
Before the evening’s antics begin head back to your lodgings. Freshen up, put your glad rags on and hit the streets once again.
If you’re not hungry just yet, head to Oddjob, in the Mid-Market neighbourhood. Open from 5pm on a weekday or 7pm on a Saturday this is a trendy little spot that describes itself as the working man’s cocktail bar. If cocktails aren’t your thing, there’s beer and wine too.
For dinner hit up Montesacro. This trendy but rustic Italian joint is perfect for a romantic meal. It’s not your typical Italian and the location is rather bizarre being down a back alley, but just bare with it, This Roman style Pinseria-Enoteca serves Pinsas rather than pizzas. As for romance, it probably won’t be quiet as this place is popular. You may even need to make a reservation, although often a seat at the bar will be available. I think this is the best place to sit anyway! Pull up a stool, gaze at the shelves of wine bottles and listen to the hubbub. Chink your glasses and tuck into some delicious Italian fare – the perfect way to literally wine and dine each other.
If you’ve still got some energy left, find another bar. Yep, just any bar and enjoy a drink with your partner. After all, It’s not about where about you are, it’s about who you’re with. Find a dimly lit corner and pretend you’re the only two people left in the world.
So there you have it, a great way to discover romance in San Francisco, in just one day! Enjoy.
